New pros - What you need to know about USEF drug rules

If you’re like me, at some point you will have to navigate the rules USEF medications at rated or recognized competition for the first time in your new role as TRAINER… and it can be intimidating!

And guess what, it is! If you’re client makes a mistake, not only will they face negative consequences, but you will be fined as well. So it is your responsibility to ensure that your clients are following all guidelines.

Here’s the good news. The rules are very clear and it is the responsibility of vets, owners, trainers, and riders to all work TOGETHER to make sure the horses are within the guidelines.

Also, no need to be scared and avoid drugs and medications all together. We know that through the help of science and technology, we can help our equine athletes feel their very best.

For example, did you know basic anti-inflammatories (NSAID) like Bute, Equioxx, and Surpass are permitted? We just have to ensure that the dosage (amount per body weight) and administration time prior to competition are adhered too.

Learn more about this topic in this week's video. It's just one of those things that's often overlooked by new trainers... but not you!

Cheers to chasing the dream,

Emily
