Competition record vs. pro credentials

Is this pro qualified?

SPOILER ALERT: Yes!

I met an older client of one of the young pros I have been following for a while. Let’s call this young pro Meredith. I’ve been more or less watching this trainer’s program from the outside, observing how well she markets herself in her niche.

But this was the first time I met one of Meredith’s clients: an older lady who drives over 1.5 hours (in a horse saturated area!) to work with her! Meanwhile, did I mention that this woman already had 2 horses in a full-time training and coaching program with a very well-known FEI trainer close to her house?! But yet, she makes the drive to this young pro regularly and absolutely loves her sessions.

From the outside, it looks like Meredith may have an average backyard barn and a very limited competition record herself, likely not transcending past the lowest levels in the competition ring.

But she’s got her act together. And has many other credentials.

In Meredith’s own words, she’s focused on biomechanic-based training of horses and riders. She brings in knowledge and credentials from Level 2 Centered Riding (certified), Franklin Method Equestrian (certified), extensive work experience in the US and Europe under reputable pros, and educational degrees (bachelor’s and master’s) in a similar area.

Not only did her client tell me how much Meredith helps her improve her body and mind in the saddle, she is a wonderful, patience teacher.

What do I see? Meredith has found a solid niche in the industry that she can plug into and provide value. She found the niche and now she’s running. She’s writing, she sets up booths at expos and stands there all day (which has a big cost too!). She’s building that name for herself.

So let’s circle back to this question, “How high do you need to compete to feel qualified as a professional?” Competition is just one type of credential and preparations for a successful pro career are so much more! While competition is great and is likely part of your riding goals, don’t let the time and finances of it limit you!

By the way, have you seen this video yet? If not, check it out above!

Cheers to chasing the dream,

Emily
